On this day in 1990 two men dressed as police appeared at Isabella Stewart Gardner Gallery in response to a disturbance call. When inside the two men tied up all security guards in the building and stole $500 million worth of art.
The artwork has since never been found and no arrests have been made. Though the thieves walked off with many valuable pieces of art, the robbery has left many aesthetes confused as to why more valuable pieces went untouched.
The museum has kept the empty frames on the walls and offers a $5 million reward for any information leading to the recovery of the pieces.
