Banco Central burglary at Fortaleza

Banco Central burglary at FortalezaOn this day in 2005, one of the worlds largest bank heist in Brazil’s history occurred. Gang members dug a tunnel from a nearby home into the bank. They had worked for several months on a tunnel for months and waited for a weekend and were able to disarm the bank’s alarm system. The robbers stole over $160 million in uninsured cash. Later that year five men were arrested all with $5 million, claiming to have helped dig the hole into the bank. Other suspects of the robbery have since shown up dead. In October of 2005 one of the masterminds, Luis Fernando Ribeiro was kidnapped and held for ransom. Once the ransom was paid the kidnappers murdered Ribeiro, leading many to believe that the police were involved with the murder. Three other supects were found dead in the following years.
